the Herbal Heathen ~

a new kind of school for community herbalists

I am a weed of a human and I teach herbalism to those who feel similarly. The people who find me (and they always find me) also feel the prick of being “outside” the establishment  - any establishment, herbal or otherwise. I’ve yet to find the hedge in which I feel most at home, and so I have been creating one.

“Heathen” means many things now and has been used in many ways throughout the centuries, but it was originally a word created to describe someone who lived “on the heath”, wild, ‘unfarmable’ land that thwarted the Roman’s attempts at conquest. These people were considered to be ‘ungovernable’ - not only were they far Outside the bounds of government care and regulation, they did not desire it. They resisted being folded into the culture and religious systems of the conquering forces. Nowadays we tend to hear the name tossed at folks who don’t fit into society's ideals of civilization. Maybe they are crude or raw or have a strange faith. What caused me to latch on this name, or rather, what made this name stick like a burdock burr onto *me* was this idea of having an identity that is deeply connected to Place and Community rather than a government or even societal designation. I believe that wellness is woven within Community, that the Land is both Loom and Co-Weaver, and regular, “every day” weirdos like me are the ones who must take up this work and run with it. No one is coming to save us but ourselves, together; we persist in existence through community resilience.

the program

This is a seven-month intensive herbal mentorship for folks interested in practicing community-serving, land-honoring, truly relational, “heathen” herbalism. Beginning in March and wrapping up in September, we meet bi-weekly and dig our hands deep into the weedy, communal roots of herbal medicine.

Each session will be recorded for later review and accompanied by notes, charts/graphs, plant profiles, formulas, worksheets, etc. I want you to have this information for as long as it can serve you! To maintain everyone’s privacy, the classes will NEVER be sold separately; you must be a member of the program to have access to them.

We will explore the foundational elements of working with plant allies and human bodies and the communion and communication they have with one another. We will also practice (and practice and practice and practice) cultivating relationship with plant folk through harvesting and preparations, as well as learning how to create safe and effective formulas which we will then USE. We will study the ‘human element’, our body’s systems and energetic make-up and practice the art of symptom translation. We will learn to see the Body as a whole Being, not something to be ‘fixed’ but someone to be heard, seen, understood and tended to with compassion and skill.

Who's going to love this opportunity?
*Folks who identify with feeling Outside. I'm a little like if "out of the box" had an "out of the box". I am a unique person and something of an acquired taste - and why do I start with this? Because I feel it’s important to know where your teacher/mentor is coming from. Not everyone jives with everyone else, and you know what - that’s ok. I’ve had a very colorful existence, spending the first few years of my life in the projects and then the next fifteen or so in a very strict religious sect {yes, you’ve seen the documentary on Amazon} before entering The World At Large when I was in my late twenties. My background is one of persistent resilience in the face of repressive systems. Connecting with plants saved me as a teenager by both giving me purpose and connection within community and being the main form of healthcare that was available and accessible to me. My relationship with plants is rooted in survival and deep trust. I consider the weeds to be my kinfolk, and have been adopted into their families. I describe myself as being a very passionate and relatively intense, pg-13+ teacher who isn’t afraid of the Dark. One of my favorite places of organic growth in this program was the initiation of “Swamp Time”, when folks would come to class heavy with life burdens and we would, as a group, hold them and weep with them and get shit off our chests before attempting to move on and focus on the subjects of the day. It was messy and gorgeous.

*Folks who believe they'd benefit from a more hands-on approach to learning, beyond taking notes and listening to me rant excitedly, may find this right up their alley. If you want to take away things to do, formulas to use, experiments to conduct, *and be required to participate* -hearken unto me - you may want to apply.

*Folks looking for a community to learn within, a secure place to grow and stretch, iron to sharpen yourself against and so on - you're going to appreciate this. It is my expectation and hope to have each participant feel supported and challenged by the unique, individual brilliance and engagement of their peers. The expectation is also then that we are able to sit with and hold space for each other during tension, disagreements and dissonance without immediately falling to policing, canceling and exclusion. Being in community means learning to work through the knots, committing to non-violent communication, shifting our perspectives and beliefs as needed, and approaching each other with compassion and curiosity.

*Folks who work well within a mentorship model. I'm here to share information through a lens created by my own life experiences, social/economic background, unique opportunities and even more unique education. It's my hope to support you, not only in learning important facts and necessary information, but in finding YOUR perspective. To me, that's part of the COMMUNITY aspect of this. We all have to add something. Everything is Dynamic - your relationship with the Plant and Person community is going to be different than mine, and that's gorgeous. Finding YOUR voice, YOUR cunning, YOUR Place, is part of becoming an Herbal Heathen.

Remote/Hybrid learning looks like:

~ Being able to self-pace through the course material as it is created and uploaded through the program. Classes are on Saturdays and I upload all of the recordings on Monday mornings.

~Having access to all the recorded classes, notes, supplementals, shared emails online forever through a shared drive with the other students

~Submitting any of your work, comments, questions, etc. through email, if needed

~Having your access/tutoring/coworking hours with me through Zoom, if needed

~Possibly missing the in-person work days {although any 'teaching' that happens during those days will be recorded and uploaded}. I say possibly because I have some folks interested in remote positions who live just a few hours away and may try to make it to a work day or two.

~Being responsible for supplying your own printouts, herbs, jars, bottles, menstruums, books, harvesting space, etc.  if needed

~The pricing and accessibility aids are all available for remote/hybrid spaces
